Everything you need to pack for the perfect Maldives holiday — from snorkelling gear to evening wear, we've got you covered.

The Maldives is unlike any other destination on Earth — a collection of 1,200 coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, where the water is so clear you can see the reef from your overwater villa. Packing for this paradise requires a little thought, because you're balancing beach life, water activities, and resort dining.

Start with sun protection. The Maldivian sun is intense year-round, and you'll be spending most of your time outdoors. Pack reef-safe sunscreen (many resorts require it to protect the coral), a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-protective swimwear. A rash guard is essential if you plan to snorkel for extended periods.

For water activities, bring your own snorkel mask if you have one — resort rentals are often ill-fitting. A waterproof phone case or an underwater camera is worth every penny; the marine life here is extraordinary. Fins are bulky to pack but make a real difference if you plan to snorkel frequently.

Evening wear is often overlooked. Most Maldives resorts have at least one fine-dining restaurant with a smart-casual dress code. Pack two or three evening outfits — lightweight linen or cotton works perfectly in the tropical heat. Sandals that can transition from beach to dinner are a practical choice.

Finally, don't forget a dry bag for boat transfers between islands, insect repellent for evenings (mosquitoes can be present near vegetation), and a reusable water bottle — many resorts have filtered water stations to reduce plastic waste.

Expert Tips

Pack light — most resorts offer laundry services, and luggage transfers between islands can be tricky with heavy bags.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen only — many resorts ban chemical sunscreens to protect the coral.

A waterproof phone pouch is more practical than a bulky underwater camera for most travellers.
